Nice and Cosy!

We installed a woodburning stove in reception  to keep the shop and various rooms nice and cosy. Not only does it give out a great amount of heat, is more or less free to run and looks really great but, most importantly, the lurchers are happy!

Added: Thursday 23rd November 2017 @ 15:00:29 PM

Catlodge Roof

We had the sheeting removed from the cattery roof and additional insulation and fresh shetting installed. The job took about a week and now the building is good for another 25 years!

Where are the Pet Pictures!!

I've been asked why we don't regularly upload pictures of our boarders 'doing their bit' whilst here  "like other sites do".

It is true, I'm not keen on having pictures of our guests all over the Internet for others to see.
We operate a private business, and who is here is nobody elses affair. Indeed one of our customers asked for the surname to be taken off the pet run card as she was worried in case someone local found out that she was on holiday. Although perhaps this was a little excessive, the matter of home security whilest away could be jepordised if dogs are recognised cavorting in the kennels paddock by someone with malicious intent.....
Those pictures I do upload are not recent, and are used to illustrate the facilities we have to those interested.

We operate an 'open door' policy with regards to customers and potential customers. By this I mean potential customers can visit us anytime we're open to have a look round. And as a customer you're generally encouraged to come to the unit with your pet after booking in, and also come and get him/her when you pick up. So there's plenty opportunity to see us and the facilities 'warts and all'. That's got to be better than a photo.

Although it's always nice to get a pat on the back we are always pleased to hear constructive critisism and any improvements, or new ideas, that we should think about. In this case (unless there's a significant demand for photos!!) I'll continue in the current system.

I Resolve to be Better!

Scanning down the 'News' posts you'll notice that a number are dated today, indeed I've been 'bad' about keeping the pages on the site up-to-date. This is probably because I tend to put things on to our FaceBook page now. However FaceBook is of-the-moment, and posts on there are lost within a few days, and there's not really the continuity experienced in a website.  Besides, many people don't use FaceBook (quite understandable, I'm not the greatest fan either)! So, as I've had a bad back for a couple of days, I've gone through the site and updated the photos, information and now the 'News'. This has kept me in the office (which is probably the best place - as I'm a 'little irate' with the back stopping me going about the usual things). However it's not been wasted time, I hope!

Summer Barbeque

After another crazy summer holiday period we're having a wee alfresco meal. And the dogs enjoyed it too!

Job Done!

The last of the paint was put down in early March 2016 to complete the refurbishment of the main block. Over the last 4 years the building has been more or less refitted, and the new units feel 'airier' and more comfortable. They're certainly warmer and quieter, as the walls now provide better sound proofing and improved thermally over the steel partitions previously installed. The surfaces are now all sealed and considerably easier to clean which improves the overall hygiene of the block. Thanks to the staff for all their hard work cleaning out the whole building time and time again as the work progressed and then painting the whole place. It looks great!

Added: Wednesday 21st September 2016 @ 14:30:24 PM

Fox Damage

Sadly a fox broke in and took the last 3 ducks in February. It also took a couple of hens, the remaining 5 were well up in the rafters and presumably didn't come down. I suppose the fox has to eat too.

Added: Wednesday 21st September 2016 @ 14:13:35 PM

Starting the Insides.....

Minus 15C, mid-January 2016, and removing the partitions on the inside of the main block - job has to be completed well before Easter.....All the electrics have also to be moved and replaced, the new walls dried and painted. Then the floors have to be screeded and painted. It's a pretty big job.

Added: Wednesday 21st September 2016 @ 14:08:41 PM

More Upgrading

Now that the outside runs are looking good, the next thing was to replace some of their covers. By using twin-walled polycarbonate sheets we have improved the light for the dogs, reduced noise, and improved the insulation. This picture shows the job progressing about 1/2 way down one side of the main block.

Visit By The Dog Trust

With microchipping becoming a legal requirement we set up a morning in August 2015 for The Trust to come and chip dogs for free. It turned out nice, and I seem to think they did about 190 pets. We don't chip dogs ourselves anymore, but are still asked.

Added: Wednesday 21st September 2016 @ 12:32:51 PM

Upgrading the outside runs

In the Spring of 2014 we started replacing the steel outside runs with concrete walls, this was a big job but had a number of benefits: increased cleanliness, reduced noise, less wind through the buildings, improved heat retention to name a few! Obviously when the kennels are busy we couldn't do this, so once again in Spring 2015 we got on and completed the fit. The new outside runs are a great benefit. It's important to keep the buildings in a first class state and this is year 2 and 3 of a 4 year refurbishment plan.

Staff Back up to Quota!

Well we finally got Lisa back from Maternity leave a couple of weeks ago, and she says 'that's it!'. Did she say that last time as well? :-)
She came back for some refresher days before her leave ended, which was great and helped her get back into the swing of squidgying out the runs and cleaning the drains!

So now along with Ilona and Donna our full staff are back up and we're running like a well oiled machine. A machine which, I understand, runs pretty well on the cinammon swirls from Lidls' bread counter!

Added: Thursday 20th June 2013 @ 22:07:58 PM

Fox Strike

The colder spell has brought in a fox to the area who has taken a number of the ducks. Firstly we thought they'd flown off (there's been a lot of geese etc about recently) and/or moved to the River Lossie or the next door farmers pond.
But after it was seen on the CCTV  (3 o'clock in the morning) I've started locking in the ducks at night, much to their consternation. However they're getting used to being herded now, and we've not lost any more. I had thought that foxes came in and 'killed eveything' but there was no sign, and it looks like he/she had been lifting them one-at-a-time for a few days.
As I'm not going to try to catch the fox (they have to live as well, I guess), the alternative was to secure the ducks!

Added: Wednesday 30th January 2013 @ 12:45:02 PM

Signage

It's been about 20 years since I put up the sign at the end of the road, so it's about time it got a facelift, and a bit of a paint job! It certainly stands out a bit better now!

Added: Wednesday 26th September 2012 @ 14:33:41 PM

Kennels Refit

Over the last 10 weeks we have stripped off and replaced the flooring in the main kennel block. At the same time we dug out and replaced the main drains and associated channelling. In all about 300kg of floor paint was lifted, the concrete refurbished and the dog doors reset. The result is that the building is now 'like new', the floors are, as you can see from the picture, beautiful, and the whole building ready for a busy summer!!

Added: Monday 4th June 2012 @ 14:44:14 PM

Duckin Around

Daffy decided to sit on a heap of eggs and for her sins cracked out a heap of ducklings a week or two ago.
She was very good at showing them round the policies, but someone started eating them, so we caught her and she spent a few days in the cattery while an outside run was fabricated. She's now happily presiding over 8 critters who are growing pretty quickly!
April 2012 update: The ducklings are now fledging and are roaming around with everybody else. Of course Margot is sitting on eggs (due at end of April) and Felicity has a brood of 7 ducklings which hatched early this month....the place is going quackers!
May 2012 update: It's official - we're drowning in ducks as of the latest hatching we now have 32 (and have rehomed 2 on top of that!).

Added: Wednesday 9th May 2012 @ 11:04:04 AM

Scooby Dooby Doo

Thanks to The Northern Scot, who gave us the front page banner and some editorial, the Great Dane X  GSD has been rehomed to an experienced home in the country. She was with us from 4th January and, because of her size and issues (which was probably why she was abandoned), finding the right family was not easy.
Thank you to everybody who phoned and called asking after her!

Latest Fowl Beasts!

New Sales Line

We have taken on  Fergusson smokeless, standard and premium coal. After having problems getting decent coal for my multifuel fire last year I have brought in a range of 'clean' (if there is such a thing!) coal. What's more the prices are considerably cheaper than others in Elgin!! Further details in the Retail Section...

Fees, Charges and VAT

From 1st October VAT will be liable on all our activities. This means all bookings, whenever they were made, will be liable to tax at 20%. To alleviate this a bit we have decided to reduce our fees to absorb about 1/2 the VAT increase until the end of the year after which they will revert but have VAT added.
Example
Kennel rate prior to 1st October 2011 is £10.00.
       From 1st October -31st December  is      £9.17 + VAT
From 1st January 2012 charge will be     £10.00 + VAT

Added: Saturday 17th September 2011 @ 09:23:50 AM

Security Fencing

Over the early summer we installed improved security fencing around the kennel block. This was started last summer on the north facing side and has now been continued right round and the old wire fence has been removed. Apart from the improved security (obviously!) there is significantly less wind blowing throught the kennels, and the dogs are definately happier.

Mongrel Xses Cross the Finishing Line

We decided to enter a team for the Moray Great Bike Ride 2011, which covered roughly 25 miles around the Elgin>Duffus>Alves area on Sunday 26 June 2011.
Despite the proverbial Cats & Dogs initially, the weather improved, and we had a jolly nice jaunt (except for the 3 flat tyres and 1 chain off) in the country, and at the same time raised £320 for charity. Thanks to all you donors!!

Update on Verandhas

30th June 2011: The final 12 were fitted this week, meaning we have replaced, renewed or upgraded all the existing units, and have added a further 12 to the building. They now all have UV protected transparent roofs and a wind break on the prevailing side, so the cats will be even happier with the views and can enjoy them no matter what the weather!

Added: Friday 1st July 2011 @ 10:37:16 AM

Verandha Upgrade

The first delivery of new Verandha for the cats has been installed, these are slightly more roomy and have a few extra features which are slight upgrades over the current ones. The cats seem impressed anyway!
Over the next months we will be improving the remainder, and also adding some more!

Added: Wednesday 11th May 2011 @ 17:00:16 PM

Panel Refit Complete

It's taken about 6 months of on and off work by all the staff, but we recently completed a refit of all the kennel wall panels. Over the last 15 years these have seen a lot of 'corrosive' activity both by the dogs and the persistent cleaning, and were reaching the end of their life. The new panels have a few design improvements to help reduce barking, improve hygiene and create a better environment in the dogs sleeping area.
Without a doubt the prize of the 'Golden Rivet' goes to Iris who must have popped thousands of rivets into the sheets over the time!

I do hope you like the new look website, designed over a couple of months by Chris from Colourjam.com.
I have incorporated an updateable Retail Area and a Lost & Found Section.
We have many calls from people who have lost their dog or found a cat, and until now there has not been a local site which collates this information: It'll be interesting to see if it is a service which is used. Although we do not take in pets to rehome, occasionally we are asked to help, and can advertise these pets here also.
If you have any comments, thoughts or improvements for the site, please use the 'Contact Us' page to let me know.
